Our first views of the Adriatic out the coach window proved that even here along the “sunny Adriatic” a little rain must fall:


In addition to clouds and showers, our stay in Opatija was marked by a persistent wind called a “jugo.” In this view across the Opatija lido not one sunbather was to be seen as the wind kicked up the surf:


Due to its mild Mediterranean climate, Opatija began to develop as a resort in the mid-1800’s. Luxury hotels and villas were built and the small town became a fashionable turn-of-the-century resort. Colorful, opulent buildings can still be found along the coast:






There are many reminders of the town’s genteel, early-20th century tourism:




The statue of a girl with a seagull has become one of the symbols of Opatija. Erected in 1956, it is located on the Lungo Mare seaside promenade, for us the best part of our stay in Opatija:
