A Walk Along the Adriatic

Not the sunniest or calmest day for a hike. Nevertheless, off we went on the seaside promenade known as the “Lungo Mare.” Opatija is near one end of this 7.5 mile path, much of which is surfaced with flagstone:

Winding along the coast, the Lungo Mare passes small boat harbors, pebbly beaches, oaks, palms, fig and bay trees and partially-hidden villas dating from the end of the 19th century. The photos we paused to take should be mostly self-explanatory:

The end of the walk lies just ahead near this restaurant in the town of Lovran:

Looking back the way we came, Opatija is barely visible in the distance:

Fig trees like this one growing wild added welcome brightness to an overcast day.

The Lungo Mare is a splendid walk and, as you may guess, very popular with the summer crowd. Some folks even walk it both ways. However, along the coast, buses are inexpensive, frequent and easy to use. In no time at all, we were back at our hotel in Opatija.
