The first Corn Palace was built in Mitchell in 1892 as a venue for local residents to enjoy a fall festival with extraordinary stage entertainment. Shown below is the third reincarnation of the Corn Palace, this one built in 1921 to replace earlier structures that proved too small:
The Palace is redecorated each year with naturally colored corn and other grains and grasses with a different theme chosen each year. In addition to the annual harvest festival, the Palace is put to good use, for example, for industrial exhibits, dances, stage shows, meetings, banquets, proms, graduations and basketball games.
Heres a shot of the main floor prior to the start of the annual Polka Festival:
Quite an impressive place for a town of only 15,000 citizens.
All danced out, we leave Mitchell behind tomorrow with one eye on the weather. Its certainly changing.
