The historic district of Petoskey, MI, is carefully restored. I would not be surprised if this the best these buildings have EVER looked.

Here’s a view from Waterfront Park across Little Traverse Bay:

The history museum, in the converted railroad station, is a natural place to learn more about local history. We were reminded of the many summers Ernest Hemingway spent here in his childhood and youth and how that impacted his writing.

Nearly 40 years ago, my Notre Dame office mate and I took a short camping trip to the Mackinac area. I have never forgotten the impression Petoskey, MI, made on me then as I saw it for the first time. Driving downhill into town, the view was simply glorious: bright blue skies and a crisp horizon above Lake Michigan’s sparkling turquoise waters. Today, Patty and I experienced a carbon copy of that summer day long ago. I’m forced to conclude that this type of summer weather is common in Petoskey.

What a superb day for a bike ride! I’m not sure how the weather could have been more lovely. Riding along the Little Traverse Wheelway made me feel like a carefree kid again with not a worry in the world. It was quite therapeutic as well as good exercise. Here’s one of several beauty stops along the way:

Judging from the extremely heavy traffic through town, we are not the only ones who are attracted to this beautiful area. Tomorrow, we leave Petoskey to its many other admirers as we move into upper Michigan.
