Up and over the mighty Mackinac Bridge brings us into upper Michigan! Not very crowded for a summer Saturday morning, eh? Though it resembles the Golden Gate in some ways, I’ve never seen the Golden Gate this uncrowded. Nevertheless, considering its winter environment at the junction of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, this bridge was a challenge to build.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan’s upper peninsula is a popular spot. The Upper Falls, shown below, is the main tourist draw. It has a 50 foot drop and stretches about 200 feet --- note the viewing platform to the right for scale.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is on the Lake Superior side of the upper peninsula near the town of Munising. To properly view the sandstone formations, tourists are advised to take a 2 and 1/2 hour boat trip from Munising or hire a small plane. Alternatively, you can drive into one area that allows a peek at the closest formations. Lots cheaper and no chance of seasickness.

We’ve safely arrived in Marquette, MI, for a two night stay before pushing on into Wisconsin and Minnesota. Balancing a day on the road with a day “about town”, now and then, makes a long trip much more enjoyable.
