After our night at Mt Cook and two in Lyttleton near Christchurch, we headed north to Picton for a morning rendezvous with an Interislander ferry. We did not allocate much time for travel between Christchurch and Picton. Consequently, our sightseeing was limited to whatever was along or close to the highway, such as this pretty stream:

The next three photos were taken near Kaikoura, a once-sleepy fishing town now famous for its whalewatching trips:

We satisfied a more basic need in Kaikoura than watching the whales at this beachside lunch stop:

Fueled up, we were on the road again:

When we had finally reached Picton and settled into our lodgings, there was time to wander the waterfront:

Clearly, at least some of Picton’s 4000 residents enjoy living near the water:

Next morning aboard a huge Interislander Ferry, we had a last look at Picton:

Exiting the Marlborough Sounds not long thereafter, we watched the last bits of the South Island disappear from view.
North Island, here we come!
