Blissful Te Anau

We liked Te Anau a lot. This little town about 100 miles from Queenstown lies peacefully on the banks of NZ’s second largest lake (Lake Te Anau). It usually serves as the starting point for trips to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound but makes a great location to recharge your batteries. The flower-laden motels, scenic paths by the lake and calm, quiet nights were especially welcome after the hubbub of Queenstown:

Happily, Te Anau also has a good assortment of restaurants from which to choose. We were repeaters at one restaurant because of its most delicious and unusual pizza. Instead of tomato sauce, it had cranberry sauce along with chicken, brie and mozzarella cheese and a hint of rosemary seasoning --- out of this world and unlike anything we’ve tasted before!

After an all-day trip to Doubtful Sound, our plan had been to drive to Milford Sound the following day. Instead, we succumbed to the laid-back attractions of doing not much of anything in comfortable Te Anau. Our big excursion for the day was taking a rented tandem to the edge of town:

We rode in an area which is apparently slated to become a lakeside development. The roads were all in --- smooth and level and virtually traffic-free as not one home had been built. In the meantime, sheep grazing next door had stunning views:

When it came time to say goodbye to this pleasant place, its attractive lakeside setting seemed to beg for “just one more day”:
