About 40 miles NE of Zagreb, the old town of Varazdin is a well-preserved Hapsburg-era town. It was actually the capital of Croatia for 20 years during the 1700’s but a disastrous fire forced relocation to Zagreb. Varazdin’s attractive castle now houses a museum:

The museum tour, though, was quite lengthy, leaving little time to see the rest of old town.

The heart of Varazdin is largely pedestrianized:

Due to its flat terrain and large student population, bicycle use is high (outside of class time anyway):

Here's the main square with its 16th century town hall firmly rooted on the far end:

Near the town hall, this architectural feature was perfect for people who really liked to see what’s going on out there:

Behind Patty is the rococo-style Sermage Palace, now housing an art gallery:

Church steeples seem to be everywhere in Varazdin. Two such belong to the Cathedral:

and to the Church of St. Nicholas:

Way too soon, it was time to board the bus and head out of town as it was dangerously close to lunch time. On the way back to Zagreb, we enjoyed a midday meal in a quiet vineyard restaurant:

Delicious food and nice views, too:
