Today we walked the geyser fields to our hearts’ content, safely guided by boardwalks.

The striking colors of the pools are due to mineral content and to micro-organisms called thermophiles that thrive in extremely high temperatures.

These creations are so bizarre, it’s sometimes hard to believe they are on planet earth:


There were plenty of sights other than geyser basins to view. For example, the Kepler Cascades on the Firehole River:


And, of course, there were frequent sightings of the big bruisers of Yellowstone on their own turf (as well as on the road):


Tomorrow we venture back into the Park from Gardiner, MT, with two main goals on our agenda: Mammoth Hot Springs and Yellowstone Falls --- along with whatever else we can cram in. We're fortunate that no forest fires have impacted our plans --- somewhat hazy skies have been the only effect we've seen.
