An hour’s drive south from Rochester brought us to the old town of Lanesboro on the Root River with the goal of riding a piece of the Root River Rail Trail. Misled by the forecast, we expected a cool and cloudy day. Instead, it was sunny and bright with comfortable temperatures and a light breeze. “AUTUMN” was written all over it in capital letters! Such a blessing it is to be able to bicycle on such a beautiful day, next to a peaceful river through rural countryside! These photos of scenes along the way almost speak for themselves:

Ready for harvesting, corn grows right up to the path without fencing:

Doesn’t this look like a delightful spot for a picnic?

Another way to enjoy the Root River valley:

After several hours of this wonderful exercise, we resumed our travels. Driving east through the valley was almost as scenic as riding a bike next to the river. Our route to Prairie du Chien led us to the Great River Road along the Mississippi River. Today, Ol' Man River was as blue as ever we’ve seen.

Tomorrow, we arrive in Rochelle, IL, for a two-day visit with Patty’s family. Our last burst of driving should bring us home, at last, on Saturday. What a change of gears that will bring!
