Although not in our original plans, we decided to take a short excursion to Waterton National Park since we were so close to Canada. It’s a pretty drive. One of the first wonders to come into view is Chief Mountain. Like an apparition out of the desert Southwest, it has spiritual significance to the Blackfeet Indians.

The world-renowned Prince of Wales Hotel in the heart of the park has an incredible setting on Waterton Lake:

The view from the hotel is fabulous and seems to go on forever:

The upper reaches of Waterton Lake are actually in Montana. To the right in this view is Waterton Village. It appears to be a peaceful place but appearances can be deceiving. While exploring the town on foot, we were nearly run over by a deer galloping across the street at full tilt just in front of us! Judging by the number of animals we spotted afterward, the deer population considers the town's green, watered lawns a great delicacy.

After driving to the end of the road at Cameron Lake (which, like parts of Glacier, was also obscured by haze), we set out to see the bison. However, that will have to wait for Yellowstone as we never did find them. Instead, we saw some beautiful scenery where Alberta’s prairie rises to meet the Rockies:

Tomorrow, we finally drive the Going-To-The-Sun Road, enroute to Kalispell, MT.
