All across North Dakota, we saw thousands of acres of sunflowers being grown for their seeds. Judging from their droopy appearance, it must be getting close to harvest time.

Ponds like the one below were seen less and less frequently the farther west we went. Perhaps, since we gained about 1000 feet of elevation across the state, the water table is simply too far below the surface in western North Dakota.

A typical farm scene

Getting close to Montana, we began to notice oil pump rigs such as the one below. We saw several oil drilling derricks as well.

We’ve left the eye-pleasing state of North Dakota behind, staying tonight in northeastern Montana in the little town of Wolf Point. Although lodging and restaurant choices are quite limited in these small towns, they have a peaceful charm we like a lot.
