Trip Overview

• The title for this photo-logue seems fitting as it reflects our primary purpose in leaving home: to visit Patty’s daughter and her family in Bangkok on their three year assignment with the State Department. Visiting this family abroad on their different assignments is becoming a habit. This is our third such trip, following Mali in Nov 2010 (In and Out of Africa) and Kyrgyzstan in Oct 2013 (Of Plov and Tapas). Staying with family is a wonderful way to tour a foreign country for the first time —- especially when you don’t speak the language.
  
  We chose a “southern route” through Australia to travel in summer weather and to visit three of its cities: Canberra, because it is the capital and we had never been there before; Perth, because it is a beautiful city on the Indian Ocean; and Sydney, in hopes of reliving some of the happy memories of our 1997 visit, shortly after we married. On this five week journey, we stayed 3 nights in Canberra, 9 in Perth, 5 in Bangkok, 3 in Chiang Mai, 4 in Singapore and 8 in Sydney. If that doesn’t add up to 35, we may have slept through a few in the air.
  
  

  ADVICE ON NAVIGATING THIS DOCUMENT
  
  

• This website has a few quirks that may not be obvious. The cause of that quirkiness is that it is linked to 5 photo albums controlled by Google: 3 for Australia, 1 each for Thailand and Singapore. Any modern browser should open an album in a separate tab or window. To return from an album, simply close its tab or window (depending on your browser). Google provides no back button.
  
  Each photo in an album can be clicked to view an enlargement. In fact, all photos can be viewed in the “enlarged mode” (with black background). Doing so, however, means only a short caption is viewable for each photo rather than a more complete narrative. The Google Albums also provide a slideshow option of the photos only in Full Screen without captions (to access click on the 3 dots aligned vertically).
  
  Full Screen (or Presentation) Mode is recommended in your browser. In this mode, tabs should reappear automatically when your mouse reaches for them.
  
  If you are viewing this on an iPad --- as of May 20, 2020 --- the Chrome browser will not open the Google Albums for unknown reasons. Safari, Firefox and even the Google browser all work.
