Southeast Guernsey
-
A short bus ride south of St. Peter Port is the Bluebell Wood Nature Reserve. On a sunny afternoon, it called to us.
Our timing was excellent as the flowers were at their peak and were a delightful sight. However, making a circuit of the Reserve was a fair effort as the woods have a considerable slope.
From the Reserve a second bus took us to the Jerbourg Hotel near St. Martins Point. This is as far to the southeast a walker on Guernsey can go without venturing into the water:
The path down was obvious and did not seem too strenuous. We decided to give it a go.
Going down, the worst part was the wind which was so strong and blustery it took your breath away. Despite that challenge, the little building on the point was soon reached:
The ocean side of that structure was blocked off. Our guess is that that side accommodates a fog horn as well as a ship warning light. From the building there were clear views back to the top where we began our descent ...
and equally clear reminders that the top was now 228 steps away.
