On our last full day in Switzerland, with weather promising to be near-perfect for hiking, that is exactly what we did. Our destination was the Simmental Valley, accessible from the city of Spiez. Alighting from the train in Weissenburg, we headed off on a 3-hour stroll to Erlenbach under beautiful skies:
Though passed by a few cars (probably local traffic), we encountered no other hikers.
Uphill and downhill, our route varied from asphalt to grass to stones; it weaved through isolated backwoods and crossed sunny pastures alive with staring cows. It was a delightful mix.

Reaching our rambles end, we gave up an opportunity to visit Erlenbachs ancient church (pictured above) in favor of ice cream. Somehow, in this land of many cows, that seemed a more fitting finale.
