Leaving Zurich Airport by train, we arrived 3 1/4 hours later in Locarno. There, we were met by our landlord and whisked away to our apartment. It would have been nice to sleep the rest of the afternoon but we opted instead to check out the famous Ascona waterfront. An easy 10 minute bus ride brought us to this attractive resort (see Ticino map below). Colorful Ascona, depicted on so many Swiss calendars, graces the preceding page.
Rain showers eventually cut our Ascona tour short --- not, however, before we had lazily drifted down the main promenade, taking in the sights:
In time, we got to know our hometown a bit better. Just around the corner from our apartment was Castello Visconti, most of which dates from the 15th and 16th centuries:
While the side shown above seems built for defense, the opposite side is definitely domestic:
In the early morning, clouds hug the hills above cobbled Piazza Grande:
Locarno is situated on Lake Maggiori. The long, paved path at lakeside would be great for strenuous biking or walking except for one thing: too many photo opportunities to pass up!
