On a relatively clear day, we boarded the cog train in Lauterbrunnen bound for the highest rail station in Europe at an elevation of 11,300 feet. The facilities at Jungfraujoch are just 2000 feet below the Jungfraus summit.
Despite the pricey tickets, the train was packed, making photography en route rather challenging. This shot looks back at Wengen, perched above the valley on the side opposite Gimmelwald:
This bizarre formation was certainly eye-catching, like an eruption caught in mid-boom:
Two more shots taken on the ride to the top follow:
Finally reaching our lofty destination, we had this splendid view of the Aletsch Glacier:
The only disappointment was that the outdoor terrace was still being cleared of snow and therefore closed. A photo through glass was the consequence.
To reach the open air, we walked a long, very cold tunnel until we were out in the sunshine. With no wind and abundant sun, it felt comfortable outdoors even at our extreme altitude. We were not alone:
Many others were enjoying the view, having refreshments and taking photos:
Having seen what we came for, we eventually retraced our route back to Lauterbrunnen. Since it was only mid-afternoon, we set out across the valley to reach Trummelbach Falls. The stroll through the valley is magnificent:
Even with an inclined elevator, it is still a lengthy climb to see the best of these falls, hidden away inside a mountain:
The echoing roar of the water as it corkscrews through its course is deafening and even intimidating:
By then, after a long and satisfying day, it WAS time to head for home. A bus ride back to Lauterbrunnen, a train to Interlaken and another to Lungern was all it took.
